TV show may help get people in Dorset moving

Many of those with TV aerials in Dorset, including those who have had aerial repairs in Dorset, may be fans of BBC hit show Strictly Come Dancing. The programme, which has completed eight series and is hugely popular among viewers around the country, features celebrities showing off their moves with professional partners in a heated competition.

According to the project manager of an initiative being run in Dorset, it may be possible to organisers of the scheme to capitalise on this enthusiasm in a bid to get older people more active.

Activate Performing Arts is running a community dance project known as A Dance A Day and it hopes to promote fitness, wellbeing and creativity among the over 50s.

The organisation's Alice Chutter said: "A lot of people who have booked onto the taster sessions have rekindled a passion for dance through the Strictly Come Dancing television programme. Ballroom dancing is becoming more popular again. I'm working really hard to put out flyers and spread the word.

"I think it will have a good take up, it's fun, people should come along and give it a go, there's nothing to lose."

She added that Activate Performing Arts, which is a theatre and dance development agency for Dorset, is attempting to promote the health benefits of dance.

Ms Chutter went on to point out that if people, including those with TV aerials in Dorset and individuals who have benefited from aerial repairs in Dorset, do not like their first session, they are under no obligation to go back.

She also said that the organisation is hoping to end up with a core group of around 20 to take part in regular classes from September onwards.

Meanwhile, the sessions are available to people of all abilities, from those who have some dance experience to individuals who have two left feet but enjoy moving to music.
