Self-promotion is generally frowned upon in polite company. Deemed as egotism or self-importance rather self-belief, trying to sell ourselves to others is often just dismissed as vanity and therefore yields very little of any benefit. In turn, the majority of us remain tight-lipped about such self-belief and often head the opposite way trying out some false modesty and self-deprecation in its place.
However, what very few people consider is that even self-effacement is its own way a type of self-promotion, even if it is somewhat inverted. In fact, self-promotion as a whole can be a hugely important way to help one get ahead, not only in private, but also in terms of business. It is all simply a way of how you go about it.
Since such promotion is often looked down upon, when it comes to business we often sell ourselves short or simply don’t promote ourselves in the way we could for fear that people may see it as arrogance. However, even for those who don’t like talking about themselves, there are plenty of ways to promote oneself without even having to look like you are doing it yourself.
Take promotional products for instance. Coming up with items that extol the virtues of your company can be a great way to promote it without having to be quite so vociferous yourself. They also offer you a chance to be creative in the spin that you create, giving you the ability to be humorous with it, so that you are not simply appearing to be overly self-assured.
Equally, self-deprecation can also work as a form of self-promotion for those who really don’t wish to oversell themselves. Whether this is verbally or through the means of promotional products again, being humorous in modesty will again draw people to you as they will feel you have a sense of humour about yourself and what you do. Ultimately, as long as people end up talking about you, your self-promotion will have worked.
There are a wide range of outlets selling promotional products in the UK and, as mentioned, these can make a huge difference to the way in which you promote yourself. Ultimately, whether you do it verbally, or through getting ideas from such companies who sell promotional products in the UK, the main thing to remember is that any self-promotion (or self-deprecation) should be done with either integrity or a sense of humour. Simply bragging, for instance, will get one nowhere.
Ultimately, self-promotion doesn’t have to come across as bragging. Instead, it can simply be an enthusiasm and belief in what you are doing. This is the biggest key to success in marketing – if you try the ‘car salesman’ approach you will no doubt be seen through fairly quickly, but if you are simply enthusiastic about what you have to offer, rather than self-promotion being seen as a negative quality it will instead be seen as a positive one.
So, promote yourself as much as you can. Just make sure you do with a touch of humility too.
