To make it in certain industries today, you don’t even have to be good. You simply have to convince others that you are. This can be both a gift and a curse, meaning that those imperturbable few with sheer determination and a good line in self-promotion can do far better than those with real ability or talent.

This can create many problems, not just for those trying to make their way within a certain industry, but also for those on the other side – the customers who will end up getting inferior quality products, services or art simply due to the fact that many industries have now become filled with substandard companies or individuals. For those trying to make their way in a specific area, the problems come with knowing exactly how to create a buzz.

As a race, we have a pact mentality, and many people will convince themselves they like something just to fit in with the apparent zeitgeist. Therefore, if you appear popular, you will in turn become popular. In turn, those who manage to gain popularity whilst also having some modicum of ability, knowledge or talent will therefore stand out above the crowd.

But, how do you create that buzz? Especially for those more modest or self-effacing individuals, trying to sell oneself to the masses can be hard. However, it is all about understanding the buzz that will work for you within your own specific line of work.

For instance, artists with absolutely no previous knowledge of how to create art have become household names simply by being endorsed by other well respected artists. Therefore, one way to create buzz is to seek endorsements. Such endorsements can be easily got, simply by talking to friends in the same profession or even by just shopping your wares around and being cheeky.

Creating intrigue also works. You can do this in many ways, especially when you use eye catching promotional campaigns, utilising posters, promotion merchandise and other such forms of advertising. Giving people just a small sliver of information will hugely pique interest and by offering someone promotional items or adverts that give an intriguing hint of who you are, but leave them to find out more on their own, you will not only get individuals interested, but also groups of people as a whole discussing such tactics.

Promotional merchandise in general can be a very handy tool. If you create promotional items that are funny, quirky or just unique you can find that people want to share these items more readily with others, and by making such quirky items very limited, trying to get such items will have its own source of buzz and in turn the company or individual will find that people are doing their promotion for them.

Ultimately, there are many ways to create a buzz, no matter what you do. Don’t be ashamed to get out there and indulge in some self-promotion, but also try to think of unique ways to get people talking about you. Ultimately, standing out is what is important, and the more you can do that, the more successful you will find that you are.
