Couples should not ask for specific wedding gifts, expert says

When couples tie the knot, there are many decisions they have to make. Not only do they have all the details of their big day to arrange, but they must decide what approach they will take when it comes to their wedding gifts. After all, their guests will be eager to hand over personalised wedding gifts and in many instances they want guidance as to what to get.

Often, bride and grooms-to-be are confused about how to go about this task as they do not want to appear rude.

Well, writing in the Seattle Times, expert Carley Roney offered some words of advice. The specialist, who is co-founder and editor in chief of The Knot, said people should not ask for particular items.

She said: "You should never ask for specific gifts, monetary or otherwise. What you can do is let guests know (if they ask) that you would prefer cash gifts. Let your parents, siblings, wedding party and close friends know, too - and if guests ask them, have them relay your preference."

"But don't announce it in a formal way to your guests. Whatever you do, don't mention it on the invitation."

Ms Roney went on to say that if guests are curious, they will ask someone close to the couple what sort of wedding gifts to buy. Some will prefer to buy material presents, she added. For this reason, it is a good idea to have a register somewhere for a few items.

Meanwhile, it is vital that the wedded pair accept and acknowledge every offering gracefully. As part of this, they should send out thank you notes. And when it comes to presents of cash, the giver should be informed as to how the money was spent, she advised.
